The UAE’s second largest telecommunications provider Du is mostly preferred by expats, migrant workers and tourists. It offers fixed line, mobile telephony, internet and digital television services across the country. Until 2006 Etisalat was the sole telephone and telecommunications provider for the UAE but in February 2006 this monopoly became a duopoly with the launch of Du. The new telephone operator offered mobile services across the UAE and Internet and TV services to some free zone areas. Today it has emerged as a leading integrated telecom service provider in the UAE with about 6.5 million customers..
Du originally called Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company was established in 2005 in Dubai. Later it was commercially rebranded as Du in February 2006. Du launched mobile telecommunication services in February 2007 across the UAE, in addition to internet and Pay TV services in some of the free zones of Dubai. It has four divisions; Mobile, Fixed, Wholesale and Broadcasting division. Its Mobile division offers mobility services including mobile voice and data, mobile broadband WIFI services to business and consumer markets. It also offers mobile handsets through Du retail outlets. On the other hand, its Fixed segment delivers wire line services, including broadband, IPTV, and IP/VPN business Internet and telephone services. The wholesale division delivers voice and data services, including termination of inbound international voice traffic, international roaming agreements, international hubbing, and point-to-point leased line connectivity to national and international carriers and operators. The Broadcasting segment provides satellite and broadcasting services to media companies. In July 2007, it launched Call Select, Du’s nationwide fixed line services for voice telephony and by the end of 2010, over four million people in the UAE had chosen to become Du mobile customers. Today, Du has 6.5 million mobile customers, 555,000 fixed line subscribers, 180,000 home services subscribers and over 70,000 businesses.
